How to Control and Prevent Stubborn Weeds

The long Canadian winter is finally over and the warmer weather is here to stay. Your lawn is beginning to grow back to life but you’ve started to notice weeds are beginning to take over your lawn. Let’s face it, it only takes one stubborn weed to ruin a beautiful lawn. Here’s a list of tips to help you minimize and get rid of those pesky weeds that won’t go away without those harsh chemicals.

1. Water grass deeply and infrequently

Too much watering and too little watering can both cause harm to your lawn. Weeds that are overwatered become more difficult to control and often become unmanageable. However, under watering can make it even more difficult to get rid of them. By watering deeply and infrequently, your grass’ overall health can be improved to help eliminate weeds faster.

2. Mow higher, not shorter

Many people believe mowing their grass shorter will lessen maintenance, however it actually allows the weeds to sprout which creates more work for you in the long run. Not only does this create a faster growth cycle, but cutting on a lower setting can prevent your grass from producing the required nutrients it needs. Shorter lengths of grass also allow sunlight to reach the soil surface which promotes the growth of crabgrass and goosegrass. Setting your lawn mower at a higher setting, such as 3-4 inches, can help to minimize the growth of weeds in your lawn.

3. Mulching

Mulch helps keep soil cool and moist which aids in depriving weeds of the sunlight they require for growth. Certain mulches, often the organic ones, may even attract bugs such as crickets and beetles which are helpful for killing off weeds. Make sure to maintain your lawn mulch levels at about 2 inches deep, as anything more than 3 inches can deprive the soil of it’s necessary oxygen.

4. Hand weeding

Every lawn owner knows pulling weeds is another useful way to minimize weed growth—they also know how time consuming it can be. Weeds should be pulled in moist soil, such as after rainfall or being watered, so the roots slip out easier and don’t get left behind. In the summer, hand weeding is recommended in the early morning or late afternoon when the temperatures are more comfortable.
